  • Condition: Back cover missing. This is from a period when USGS was using a particularly poor paper stock that deteriorated due to acidic paper. Most copies of this lack covers or the covers are brittle and loose. Front cover present but detached, and chipped, and has library marks. The pages are supple and unmarked. Map is beautiful. Photos are nice. Light corner bumping. Binding is tight - no worries about splitting. Actually a good example of this report, as they go, considering they were not printed with the expectation of long life.

    This is USGS Bulletin 352, “
    Geologic
    Reconnaissance
    of a Part of Western Arizona
    .” Published in 1908, there can't be many of these around. The publication consists of the 96-page book and THE ORIGINAL MAP, which is a fold out map bound into the book. This book provides an early look at the geology of this remote desert area. The area covered runs from where Lake Mead now is, down to just south of Ehrenburg, and stays west of Phoenix, more or less. The colorful geologic map is still present (They are often cut out and framed - not that I'm suggesting that) and is really a beautifully rendered map, with great colors and a real vintage look.
    This book is full of photos and diagrams of geo
    logic features and sketch cross sections of the geology. I included pics of a few but there are many more. During the investigation of the area they travelled many of the valleys, forayed into some of the ranges, and took more than one trip down the Colorado River. It was 1903 when they started and transportation was difficult, so it's impressive that they covered so much ground.
    The writing is not so technical either. These were written less formally than in later times, and the science wasn't as advanced either. You will enjoy reading about the features they visited, especially down the river. This is a fun book for any outdoors person or armchair geologist or historian.
