The five-hundred-year history of the small town in the Ore Mountains today was rich - at the time of its founding in the 16th century, Jáchymov became world-famous thanks to the discovery of noble silver minerals and technical progress in mining and natural sciences, which attracted scholars from all over Europe.
In the 19th century, a unique production of uranium paints developed, and at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, the local pitch became famous for the discovery of two new radioactive elements - polonium and radium. In the middle of the 20th century, Jáchymov made history sadly, by destroying thousands of people abused by the communist regime to mine uranium. Throughout mining from the early modern period to the present, miners, mining officials and scientists have found unique samples of minerals that continue to amaze with the quality and diversity of the species represented. Over time, Jáchymov became a mineralogical site of world importance.
This book is divided into three basic parts: the history of the findings of the Jáchymov silver bonanzes, an outline of geology and an overview of the most important primary and secondary minerals. The publication is the result of many years of research by the authors in the archives and in the underground of the Jáchymov ore district. The book is richly illustrated with photographs of minerals from Czech and foreign museums and private collections, images of works of art made from local minerals, reproductions of historical maps and field photographs from the surface and underground.
